obama is well hung
I know it’s deeply uncool, like liking Dave Eggers. But, it’s time to come clean: I really enjoy Shepard Fairey’s sensibilities. His early stickers (which he describes as an “experiment in phenomenology“) were all over the place when I lived in San Diego off-and-on during the Nineties, so slapping one on my car when I lived in Florida made it feel like I had a piece of home with me in that wretched land.
The Obama posters first hit the street in LA (Fairey’s studio is in Echo Park), and I loved them… they were so vibrant and refreshing, and even though this piece wasn’t as Constructivist as his past work I had seen enough Fairey posters to feel like the Obama portrait had just a whiff of friendly facism to it. And that actually took my enjoyment of the piece to a sublime level (in the Schopenhauerian sense).
So, it’s really exciting to see Fairey get some props: the work is being hung in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
